The Opportunity for Innovation in Established ASCVD
A value-centric framework around the broader progress that innovation could deliver patients, caregivers, health systems, and society.
In this Center for Pharmacoeconomics report, we quantify the impact of established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) on patient health, caregiver time, medical costs, and workforce participation to estimate the societal value that could be created if innovation could restore outcomes among people living with ASCVD to those of the general US population.
Closing the gaps in outcomes between a person living with ASCVD with an LDL cholesterol level of at least 70 mg/dL while being treated with standard of care (i.e., statins with or without ezetimibe) and a person from the general US population has the potential to:
- Create $1.2-$4 million in value from improved health per person living with ASCVD.
- Free up $2,400 worth of disease-related caregiving time per person living with ASCVD.
- Avoid $175,000 in disease-related medical costs per person living with ASCVD.
- Produce $34,000 in additional labor production per person living with ASCVD.
Safe and effective therapeutics for the secondary prevention of ASCVD can unlock substantial value for patients, caregivers, health systems, and society. The societal value created by a safe and effective therapeutic for secondary prevention can extend well beyond its market exclusivity period.
This report is not about the reimbursement or pricing of specific therapeutics but about the broader progress that innovation in ASCVD could deliver for patients, caregivers, health systems, and society. Understanding the magnitude and duration of this progress can help inform whether an innovation will ultimately be “worth it” to society.
