The Opportunity for Innovation in Desmoid Tumors: A Framework Based on Unmet Need
A value-centric framework around the broader progress that innovation could deliver patients, health systems, and society if it could close today’s unmet need.
In this Center for Pharmacoeconomics Spotlight, we quantify the impacts of desmoid tumors on patient health, healthcare utilization, and workforce participation to estimate the societal value that could be created if innovation was able to restore health, healthcare utilization, and workforce participation to that of the general US population.
Healthcare innovation in the desmoid tumor landscape has the potential to:
- Create $2.3 to $7.5 million in societal value per patient by restoring health to that of the general population.
- Avoid more than $320,000 in disease-related healthcare costs per patient.
- Produce approximately $540,000 in additional labor production per patient.
Innovation begins by identifying problems that need to be solved. We hope this analysis helps decision makers better understand where unmet needs remain and the value that could be created if those gaps were closed.
