Value Estimates for Novel Non-Dopaminergic Therapeutics for Schizophrenia
Substantial health system value remains for reductions in adverse events and long-term complications.
In this Center for Pharmacoeconomics Exclusive, we quantify the health system and societal value of a novel schizophrenia therapy that is not associated with the adverse events and long-term complications common with existing antipsychotics.
Purpose of Report: Commonly used first- and second-generation antipsychotics work by blocking dopamine receptors and carry high risks of adverse events and long-term complications like movement disorders and metabolic conditions. Novel non-dopaminergic treatments in development for schizophrenia may provide safer, and more effective, options. In this report, we quantify the health system and societal value of a novel schizophrenia therapy that is not associated with the adverse events and long-term complications common with existing antipsychotics.
Bottom Line: A novel schizophrenia therapy that has risks of metabolic syndrome and extrapyramidal symptoms equivalent to that of the general population could produce a value-informed price in the range of $18,000-$75,000 per year at a commonly used cost-effectiveness threshold. These estimates may be conservative and may be updated over time.
Key Considerations: The estimates are sensitive to a number of factors, including the model structure, time horizon, perspective, population, effectiveness and safety of the novel therapy, duration on treatment, and the cost-effectiveness threshold.
Interpreting the Findings: Read the report to see how the estimates vary by the effectiveness of the treatment, the cost-effectiveness framework used, and the cost-effectiveness threshold assumed. We do not provide these estimates to suggest a price for a novel treatment, but rather to estimate some of the quantifiable health system and societal value, identify key drivers of health system and societal efficiency, suggest “novel” value elements that may influence the value proposition, and provide a reference point for how a product might perform under different cost-effectiveness analysis frameworks and assumptions. This may be useful to companies as they are thinking about evidence generation.
